16 (+1) of Toronto’s (Many) Book Shoppes

Greetings Page Warriors!

Toronto’s literary history goes back centuries. From the first press and print operators, to dedicated shoppes for the bibliophile to roam, the pursuit of storytelling was ever present, and remains so.

Recently, beloved book shoppes across Toronto have been closing, due to financial constraints and rising costs to operate a storefront. Before this list begins, there is a certain store that will forever go by Elliots on Yonge in our hearts. In the past year, Elliot’s, a three story building that quietly tucked itself in between its neighbors closed its doors for the final time.

In honour of this post, Elliot’s on Yonge provided many a reader (and writer) with floor to ceiling selections. If it wasn’t on a shelf, the store owner, and antiquarian himself, would second the search.

We’ll miss this literary staple in the Toronto community, and his tireless effort to ensure everyone who walked into the store could afford a title.
